Charter Schools
One of the educational options available to students in Pennsylvania is the opportunity to enroll in a Charter School. Charter schools are self-managed public schools that are approved by local school districts. They are created and controlled by parents, teachers, community leaders, and colleges or universities. Charter schools offer alternatives in education using strategies that may save money and improve student performance.
Charter schools are designed as an alternative to the traditional public school system, and some parts of the Pennsylvania School Code do not apply to them. However, the law related to special education remains in effect in charter schools. The Side-By-Side Quick Reference comparing Chapter 711 (charter school state regulations) with Part 300 and Part 104, shows that charter schools must follow the federal law with respect to students with disabilities.
