Screening

Your child's school has a screening process in place that identifies students who may need special education. This process may include:

  • Reviewing the student's records, including attendance and report cards
  • Reviewing the student's vision and hearing
  • Assessing the student's functioning in the curriculum, including curriculum-based and performance-based assessment for students with academic concerns
  • Systematic observation of the student's behavior in the classroom or area in which the student is displaying difficulty

For students with academic or behavior concerns, an intervention must be developed, based on the results of the screening. If the intervention produces little or no improvement within 60 school days, the student receives a formal referral for a special education evaluation. The regulations governing screening provide additional information on the process.
